UNMASKED! Building a (Black and White) Collage Doll with LCD Stamps

Greetings, Lost Coasters! Today I have a tutorial for you on how I made this zany collaged doll for our Black & White challenge over at the Lost Coast Portal to Creativity. These same principles will help you build any sort of rubber-stamped collage.

PLEASE NOTE: This is the Cliff Notes version of the tutorial… For tons of photos, explanatory details, and A VERY COOL REVEAL VIDEO showing the masks being peeled off layer by layer to reveal the final collage, visit my blog! I lay it all out for you there!  😁

1. Plan out the composition.

Gather the stamp images you'd like to use and start playing with them. You can stamp them and roughly cut them out to experiment with how to position them relative to each other. You could also use software such as Photoshop or InDesign to make a sketch.

The stamps I used to make this piece were:

Elements from the Doll Accessories Set
Black Flourish
Bishop from Chess Set

2) Decide on your focal point.

In all likelihood, this will be the image you stamp first--the one that appears on top of all the other layers in the collage, in the foreground. In my composition, it was the eyeglasses image.

3) Determine the order of operations.

Now you have to figure out the order in which you are going to stamp. Determine what is "foreground" and what is "background," and proceed in a logical order. The things that go behind, in the background, get stamped last.

4) Using your sketch as a blueprint...start stamping!

I recommend the use of a stamp positioner or stamp press tool such as the MISTI. This allows you place each stamp exactly where you want it to print, and to re-ink the stamp to get perfect coverage in case an image prints a little unevenly the first time.

5) Cut a mask for each image as you work.

After you stamp each image on the "real" paper, stamp off onto some scrap paper, and cut that print out to use as a mask. I used repositionable adhesive to stick down my masks precisely over each image before stamping the next layer atop it.

6) Remove the masks; oooh and aaaah.

Again, for a much more in-depth explanation packed with tons of tips, visit me here. And if you have any questions whatsoever about this process, please ask me in the comments over there. I’d love to help you guys try this out if you’ve never done a stamp collage before!

Dia de Muertos Skull

November greetings, Lost Coasters!

I have for your amusement today a little project in celebration of the Day of the Dead, the Mexican holiday with Aztec roots that gradually came to be associated with All Saints' Day in the Catholic Church.

I wanted this to have a traditional Mexican look, and chose cheery colors in a palette of corals, golds, and purples.

First I stamped the Skull with Wreath in black permanent ink, and masked it off. Then I stamped the Black Flourish twice around it in yellow. Next I placed the words using the Rustic Alphabet set, using several colors of Distress Ink, allowing them to blend together on the letters.

I colored the skull with thick creamy pencils in whites and grays, giving a matte, rich, chalklike texture to the skull. Then I got out several colors of Twinkling H20s, the wonderful metallic watercolors that can become pretty close to opaque when applied thickly. I painted the leaves on the wreath, then went over the yellow ink of the flourishes with a few tones of gold and orange. Suddenly the whole piece shimmered and sparkled with light and life, a wonderful contrast to the dead matte white of the skull.

There are so many fun things to do with these stamps. I was glad to make this spooky skull a little more friendly for the Day of the Dead...the glory of our ancestors etc.  😁

Happy stamping!

Cats + Numbers = Party!

Hello Again!

It's me Tera here with another fun tag project.
This time I want to share my tag that I made for the June numbers challenge over on our "Portal to creativity" challenge blog! The link is HERE
(If you haven't been there yet you really need to Hop on Over and check it out!!! There are some awesome prizes, challenges, and inspiration!!)

Start with a #8 tag (or what ever the XL-large tag size is lol) Paint or ink it yellow and pink (I used distress stains). Allow to dry.
On a separate piece of paper stamp your kitty HERE in black ink and your party hat HERE in Black ink and i did the 2nd one in Kaleidacolor "Caribbean Sea" but and blue/ green would be good :D  I then used the same blue greens to sponge color the party hat and kitty (i used a make-up sponge). For the second har i used my pink stain. I cut them all out then set them aside.

Back to the background... I used 3 stencils from TCW, 2 were grungy looking ones and one was clocks... I added numbers and circles using the black and pink dylusions paints and I added a few more circles with some blue paint to pull things together.

Last I glued my little kitty and hats on and there you have it one fun ready to party tag!!

Thank you Again for joining me in sharing this fun inspiration and don't forget to check out the new challenge on July 1st!!!
