Wizard of Oz Tutorial using Nuance Powders and Distress Inks

Hello Lost Coasters!
Leigh here today to share a tutorial on how I made the backgrounds for my "We're Not in Kansas Anymore!" tags.  These were so much fun to make and pretty easy to do too.  If you missed our Wizard of Oz DT blog hop then click HERE to catch a tornado to Lost Coast Portal to Creativity where we host all our fun Events and Challenges.

We're Not in Kansas Anymore - tag set
My 5 tags feature the following stamps:
Carmen's Veranda Wizard of Oz characters
Carmen's Veranda Flying Monkeys background
Lost Coast Designs large Cityscape

To create my "yellow brick road" I randomly embossed the 5 manila shipping tags with a Darice Brick Wall embossing folder, placing the folder at weird angles so each tag was slightly different.  Using the direct to paper method I applied Mustard Seed Distress Ink to enhance the embossed design in a very loose and random manner.

Lost Coast Designs now carries the Nuance powders by Magenta.  Nuance is a water-soluable powdered dye that comes in 15 vivid and bright colours.  The colours are available in individual 5-gram containers or as a boxed set so you can easily grab a colour or two to play with but trust me, you're going to want the whole set ;0)

I used Jade and Grass Green for the next step and randomly sprinkled the tiniest amounts of the powder onto the other side of my tags...these colours are so vibrant you really only need the tiniest speck of powder for a big result!  The magic happened when I spritzed with water to create the yummy mottled effect.   I heat set the tags to dry them before going onto the next step.

I stamped my "Emerald City" in Peeled Paint Distress Ink using Lost Coast's large Cityscape stamp, we also have a new smaller version too!

Then I stamped the flying monkeys with Black Soot Distress Ink.

I then worked some more on my "yellow brick road" - I applied Scattered Straw Distress Ink directly to the embossed bricks for a variation in of shades of yellow and also added some touches of Yellow 627 Marvy Le Plume alcohol marker for extra detail.

I finished off the tags with red glitter glue applied to all the edges.  Stop by my blog, LeighSBDesigns, for info on the Oz characters and more photos!

We're not in Kansas anymore ATC

Howdy all, for anyone who follows our Events and Challenge Blog, the Lost Coast Portal to Creativity, you will know that we recently had a Wizard of Oz themed event.

Who is your fave character in the Wizard of Oz ? Dorothy ? Tin man ? The Wizard ? There are so many great characters to choose from. But there is one group of critters who don't get much airtime, so I decided to honour them .... The Flying Monkeys. Here is my ATC :

This is one of the monkeys from Three Monkeys by Lost Coast Designs. This one is the speak-no-evil. Its open to interpretation obviously, but I personally think he's laughing about all this freaking people out business ... LOL.  He is stamped in Memento black ink and coloured with copics and gel pen, then I fussy cut him.

The tremendously large and imposing wings (arent they gorgeous) are from Carmen's Veranda. I stamped them onto velum with stazon and clear embossed them. I coloured the back of the wings white with a faber castell artist pitt pen and fussy cut them. And finally glued them to the monkey.

The background was painted with acrylic paint using an old credit card, then I added white lines and dots, and edged it in white. I glued on the flying money and cut off the section of wing that overhung the ATC. Finally I typed the words on my typewriter.

Hope you will pop over to the Lost Coast Portal to Creativity and visit Lost Coast Designs or Carmen's Veranda online stores to get a better look at these stamps :)

Have a lovely day, Nikki x

Hi friends! Is there something in the air the last couple of days? Is there some big Muse Convention stealing away my creativity? Full moon maybe? I love making bookmarks, I usually find them fun and carefree to make. Fun and carefree go right out the window when your laminator decides to eat them. The other title of this blog post was going to be “The Laminator Ate My Homework.” Mamma said there’d be days like this…well, not exactly like this but you get the point… Video! I hope you learned something or at least got a laugh:) If I ever felt the need to apologies for a video, this would be the one. Supplies:
  • Large Shipping tags
  • Wizard of OZ Stamps by Carmens Veranda and Lost Coast Designs
  • Tree background stamp
  • Stencil (A moldy oldie from Club Scrap)
  • Fibers (that’s just fancy yarn)
  • Hole punch
  • Laminator or contact paper or packing tape is desired
  • paper for backing the tag if you like
  • wizthumb2 In case you were wondering I did call it a day after this video and I went upstairs and cleaned the fridge, then I went to the grocery store and filled the clean fridge. After all I can’t be a slacker housewife and a slacker artist all in the same day:) If you were in a creative funk I hope it has passed! Thankfully mine did, til next time happy crafting!
